Before the 2010-2011 USSSA Travel Basketball Season got underway Coach John Kee was on the scouting trail and going through the developmental phases of putting five kids together and building a team around them. The main objective was to identify kids whose fathers were all ex-basketball players/athletes that either competed at the high school, college or professional levels. The remainder of the team would consist of a young athletic nucleus that would learn from the older group. Future Stars 3rd Grade Travel Team was finally unveiled and took the floor for their first tournament at the Florida Family Main Event on March 11, 2011. The coaching staff went into the season expecting it to be a learning process that would take a while. The idea was to use this season to prepare for next season with a year of experience under their belts. Surprisingly success came sooner than everyone expected. Future Stars with a team roster consistingof five 3rd graders, four 2nd graders, and one kindergartner moved on to capture their first Championship and finish 4-0 in pool play. Four months later reveled more wins, a Top 5 USSSA National Ranking and more Championships would follow, but the best was saved for last which was winning the 2011 USSSA 3rd Grade Division National Championships in Cocoa Beach, Florida on July 3rd 2011.
“Being a first year program I can’t say enough about this group of young kids” said, Future Stars Head Coach John Kee. “I have experienced games were my coaching staff and I thought defeat was near and these kids just displayed a never quit don’t give up mentality”. Future Stars wrapped up the 2011 season posting a record of 19-6 and winning 5 out of 8 tournaments.
“I feel my 2nd graders that participated in the National Championship game gained a very valuable experience and were able to contribute”. “From this experience it wouldn’t surprise me next season with those kids now being the focal point of next year’s 3rd grade team to be back in the National Championships competing for back to back titles” added, Coach Kee.
