The 90lbs Miami Lakes Jaguars, led by head coach Jack Sawyer, have a new swag this year. After being knocked out of the playoffs last year in the first round by Doral the Jaguars are back.
With a combination of old and new talent, The Four Horsemen. It was 77 years ago that a dramatic nickname coined by a poetic sportswriter and the quick-thinking actions of a clever student publicity aide transformed the Notre Dame backfield of Stuhldreher, Crowley, Miller and Layden into the most fabled quartet in college football history.
Now in 2011 the Jaguar 90 pound squad has their own version of the Horsemen; Jared Mack, Deandre Tarver, Joshua Ancrum and Anton French. Ancrum was the starting quarterback for the Miami Lakes 70 pound team last year and now is an elusive running back and linebacker along with French.
Jared Mack, who also is returning from last year’s team shares the load in the backfield as well as starts at free safety. Deandre Tarver comes over from a talented Bunche Park Cowboy team to take the role as the starting quarterback for the 90 pound Jags this year.
This preseason, the Jaguars have dominated various 90 pound teams from youth leagues all over. The Jag’s have scrimmaged teams such as the North County Rams, Hialeah Cougars, PPO Bengals and North Dade Bulldogs. The Jags have also played up weight in scrimmages this year and still came out with the victory on more than one occasion.
These four players seem to compliment each other very well on and off the field. With Anton French nursing a sprained ankle suffered while playing against Hialeah, his teammates will hold it down until his return to the field. French is expected to be the workhorse this year and says he doesn’t mind putting his team on his back and carrying them to the Super Bowl!
The Jaguars are looking ahead for the rematch in the playoffs against Doral. Ancrum says although they feel the Jaguars will be a high power offensive this year, still their strength will be their defense!
