LAKE STEVENS CARDINALS 145’s CONTINUE TO FLY HIGH

BY JONAH WOULLARD

The Lake Stevens Cardinals 145 LB. team continues to fly high above their competition in the National Youth Football League. Lead by Head Coach Kenny Eugene, the Cardinals have not lost a game thus far. Coach Kenny said, “We have a very physical team with good size and speed. We usually wear teams down in the second half with our style of football. We know we can beat a lot of teams by getting to the edge with our speed or just pound them straight ahead with our size.

The Lake Stevens Cardinals had previously defeated the Broward Canes, Oak Groove Raiders, and the Helping Hands Bulls all by double digit scores. But, the Cardinals faced a new determined opponent, the Opa Locka Panthers.  The Panthers felt they have just as much, if not more speed than the Cardinals.

The very first play of this game seem to validate the Opa Locka Panthers’ claim to speed as Panthers’ return man, #11 Brandon Bennett took the opening kickoff back for 63 yard touchdown, Panthers lead the Cardinals, 6-0.

The Cardinals’ special teams coach, Terrence Thomas met the Cardinals’ special team in mid field and said, “Let’s Go! Let’s tighten up, right now!” Those words from Coach Terrence seem to carry over to the Cardinals’ offensive side of the ball. The Cardinals started on their own 38 yard line and poured on an offensive display that overwhelmed the Opa Locka Panthers’ defense.

The Cardinals’ fullback, #8 Ruben Gonzalez, running back #2 Kendrick Janvier, and fullback #3 Sheldon Whigaham all scored touchdowns putting the game out reach against the Panthers. Cardinals’ defensive coordinator, Gary Becker was also instrumental in the win over the Panthers. Coach constantly disguised defensive coverages, which allowed three interceptions by outside linebacker, #1 Wesner Saturn, free safety #19 Benard Cooper, and linebacker #8 Ruben Gonzalez. The Lake Stevens Cardinals final score over the Opa Locka Panthers was 18-12.

The Lake Stevens Cardinals 145’s remain undefeated in the National Youth Football League with a record of (4-0). Cardinals Head Coach, Kenny Eugene said, “Our goal is to win our Super Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the Clash of the Champions State Championship Series. Anyone who stands in the way of those goals will face a hungry Cardinals team that will not be denied.”
