Buford, Georgia – The 4th Annual Deion Sanders Truth Youth Football Tournament was filled with exciting plays and plenty of action from the early morning kickoff until the last play of the day. Deion Sanders brought the Truth teams from Texas and they lived up to the Texas standard of football by dominating teams on the grid iron. After a 34-0 victory by the 10 and under Truth team, the 12 and under Truth team came out with an even more dominate score of 42-0. The 14 and under Truth team came out with the same expectations but the 14 and under Maryland Seahawks had a different idea.
The Maryland Seahawks Youth Football Organization is based in Landover, Maryland. They are proud members of the (GMYFL) Greater Metropolitan Youth Football League which was re-established in 2010. The Maryland Seahawks Football and Cheerleading Program’s motto is “No Child Left Behind.” They lived up to this motto when Jarvis Thomas brought his team of only 13 players to Atlanta to face the powerful Truth organization. After a long road trip from Maryland, the Seahawks stepped onto the field and helmets clas
hed from the kickoff until time expired in the fourth quarter.
The game began with defense and defense only. The first points were scored when the Seahawks pinned Truth in their own end zone and scored a safety. With a lead of 2-0 the Seahawks were the first team to gain a lead against Truth all day! The defense continued and neither team could score an offensive touchdown. The next points were scored when Truth’s defense answered back by scooping up a recovered fumble and returning it for a touchdown to gain the lead 2-6. The Seahawks defense came to the rescue again by gaining another safety and narrowing the lead to 4-6.
Truth huddled to try and find a way to stop this defensive assault but they came up with no answers because the defensive touchdown that they scored turned out to be the only points that Truth scored the entire game. #31 Umru Barrie of Maryland’s defensive line dominated with over 10 sacks and made it hard for Truth to establish an offensive attack. The opposite happened for the Seahawks when their offense picked up with #2 DeMarco Nelson gaining over 150 rushing yards on the day. The Seahawks went on an offensive attack and scored 2 unanswered touchdowns. #1 Cameron Powell of the Seahawks’s offense broke away for a 40 yard touchdown and sealed the victory 25-6.
Against all odds, Jarvis Thomas’s Maryland Seahawks did not back down to the very talented Truth organization. Both teams left it all on the field and did everything possible to try and win for their organization. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner and at the 4th Annual Deion Sanders Truth Youth Football Tournament and the Maryland Seahawks, with only 13 players brought home the victory. The state of Maryland has to be proud!
