Pembroke Pines’– In the second week of AYFL (American Youth Football League) action, the Plantation Wildcats 115’s and West Pines’ Wildcats 115’s faced off this past Saturday to determine who will stay undefeated.
Plantation Wildcats 115’s, lead by Head Coach, Scott Wallace, came off an impressive victory to start their season by defeating Tamarac Cougars’ 55-0. West Pines’ lead by Head Coach, Mario Perez, started their season with an overtime win over the Davie Broncos, 12-6.
In this match-up, it was all about who will withstand their ground defensively, not giving up the big play. It was a defensive battle right out the gate. In the opening drive, Plantation made strides down the field, but Plantation’s Quarterback Davonte Brown #1 turned the ball over when he muffled the football and West Pines’ recovered.
West Pines attempted to impose their will power as WPPO’s running backDallas Turner #2 pounded his way down to Plantation’s 10 yard line. Just when it seemed like WPPO was going to score, Plantation’s #60 Defensive Tackle, Cody Wolf along other Wildcats’ stuffed West Pines’ on four possessions straight.
At the start of the third, it was more defensive highlights on both sides as the game was still scoreless. On West Pines’ defensive side of the ball, #11 Linebacker, Jahkese Cruz and others made defensive stops that kept Plantation out the end zone. Plantation responded by duplicating the same defensive strategy, as #55 LinebackerTyler Nober, and a host of Plantation defensive lineman stopped any movement coming from West Pines’ offense.
At the start of the fourth quarter the lack of offensive sparks would change. Just when it seemed like the game was headed into overtime, Plantation drew up a huge play to spring Plantation’s running back #6, Tyson Russellran in the end zone on an18 yard scamper down the sidelines with 1:35 left in the game. Plantation did not convert the extra point, taking the lead 6-0.
On the ensuing drive, West Pines’ responded by going in the air withWPPO’s #2, Dallas Turner catching a 30 yard pass in between both safeties, from QB #11 Jahkese Cruz, to tie the game with :54 seconds remaining in the game.
West Pines’ took the lead by converting the extra point by WPPO’s #5. Roland Smith III, catching a pass from #11 Jahkese Cruz. (West Pines lead 7-6)
Desperate to respond, the Plantation Wildcats moved the ball all the way into WPPO’s territory on a long pass. With only seconds left in the game, Plantation went to the air to a wide open Tyson Russell, but pass came up just short.
West Pines 115’s pulled out a tough win against the Plantation Wildcats, 7-6. “It was a great defensive game on both sides” WPPO 115’s Head CoachMario Perez said. “We are still learning and getting better every day.”
“I was speechless when he caught the ball and scored,” Tonya Baker Turner said (#2 Dallas’ Turner Mother). “He is a great player and I’m proud of him.”
