A tale of two seasons as it were, in the previous season, South Kendall was rolling in at 2-5 and barely holding on to a playoff hope, as Tamiami was clinging to a wildcard spot it that the Colts would eventually clinch.
Fast forward to the 2013 season in which Gators’ Head Coach Sheddrick Williams, and Defensive Coordinator Trent Strozier leads a hungry 12 year old team. South Kendall comes in with one of the best records in the Xtreme League at 3-1. Also, a very strong Tamiami Colt team coached by Head Coach Jonathan Martin comes in sporting 3-1 record. It was a playoff like atmosphere and football tension was in the air.
Both teams came out exceedingly prepared as both defenses held their opponents out of the end zones for the entire first half. Second Half started to mold its way out as the exciting moments of a championship prize fight.
Both teams looked to land the haymaker that would be the blow to break this game wide open. South Kendall struck first as the Gators quarterback, Kevin Smith found a diving Gators’ wide receiver, Trenard Wilson for the first points of the game. (Extra point no good, Gators lead 6-0.)
Tamiami, however had a plan of their own, as the Colts drove the field and Tamiami’s # 42 FB Jayson Contreras plowed in a strong touchdown run from 9 yards out. (Extra point good.) The score, 7-6, Colts on top.
Gators were looking to respond but with 2:00 left in the game as they took to their passing attack, but Colts’ DB, Christian Herera dampened the Gators’ hopes with a interception.
In a major turn of events, Tamiami turned it over on downs. In true championship fashion, Gators’ QB Kevin Smith drops back to pass, hitting his receiver, WR Christopher Wilbon in the endzone to pull out this cardiac arresting thriller.
South Kendall defeats Tamiami 13-7 in a game that may very well end up being a playoff rematch. Colts fall to 3-2 while the Gators climb to a healthy 4-1 as they hope to make a playoff run this season.
